Breast Cancer Awareness Month

For those who know our story, a mammogram saved my life. My husband’s job was providing free mammograms to employees and their spouses. I clearly remember the day. I was caught (as usual) in Charlotte traffic and was going to reschedule the mammogram because I was running so behind schedule. I arrived just in time, but couldn’t find a parking space. My oldest daughter was with me and I really didn’t want her to witness me having a mammogram. I begged the parking attendant to allow me to park directly in front of the mammogram mobile so that she would be safe. As I approached the truck, they informed me that they were closing. I knew that I hadn’t begged to be “flattened” in the machine for no reason. I explained my situation and they graciously allowed me in and also offered to watch my daughter for me. The entire process couldn’t of taken more then 15 minutes. I truly spent more time looking for a parking space and begging for help.

A few days later I received a phone call…the dreaded phone call. That was the beginning of….my new beginning.

I have tried to be a role model to all women, but mostly children. Please read our story as featured in the current edition of Cornelius Today.

Father's Day, A Tribute To Fathers

Have you thought about what you are going to do to pay tribute to your father this coming Father's Day? Dodd of Washington thought up the idea as a unique way to honor her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart was a Civil War veteran. He was widowed when his wife died during the birth of their sixth child. Being left to raise the newborn and five other children by himself on a rural farm, William Smart did a great job of showing the love of a father to his children. It was when Mrs. Dodd was an adult that she realized just how much her father had done as a single father. To honor him, she began her first official Father's Day. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge endorsed the idea of a national Father's Day. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. And that's how Father's Day began!
